Things like these pretty much kill the morale of the developers who spent hundreds/thousands of hours into stuff that never saw the light of day.Ģ - EA saw a game that just wasn't good and decided to release it anyway instead of giving the developers more time and resources to polish it. These things usually end with one party sabotaging the work of the opposing party and vice-versa, and sounds like prime suspect of all the late-stage downgrades in scope and features.

The only reason I don't feel salty about buying it for close to full price is because I had Amazon digital credits to burn that brought it down to about $25.Click to expand. To be honest, what I take from the whole story is that:ġ - Heads of Montreal and Edmonton studios engaged in a war of influence / pissing contest that hurt the efforts of pretty much everyone who was actually trying to make a game.
I haven't managed to get enough of a desire to take on the game a second time. I put probably 60 hours into it with my first playthrough, and most of that was spent driving around on planets' surfaces. The fact that this is the first installment for Mass Effect to have zero single-player DLC points to how little they cared about this IP and its fans (instead putting everything behind Anthem). They half-assed development and writing, and were slow with fixes. The story attempted to be large in scope, but largely boiled down to a bunch of "search for the shiny object" quests. The characters are largely cookie-cutter. "It doesn't suck as much as the first one" is a pretty bad bar to hit with the fourth installment of such a beloved franchise, especially considering the money and hype involved.Īs for "Unearned toxicity", that's a bit of a stretch.

The goal is usually that they get BETTER as the series continues. It's no Mass Effect 3, but I honestly place it higher than the first ME. It was close to the feeling I was looking for and somehow seemed to me like the most complete part of the game. Pardon the painful analogy but I often felt like I was walking through an abandoned contruction site playing this game.Įdit: regarding characters, I particularly like the way they moved around the ship and chatted to each other in social groups. It's a game of interesting ideas almost entirely really really badly executed and feels unfinished in a number of key areas. That extends to the gameplay too, where some integral mechanics seem like they could be fun but the systems, UI and content to take advantage of them and translate them into an enjoyable playing experience are half arsed or half finished. Similarly, characters conceptually seem interested but are poorly written and painfully integrated and to me feel like they simply invest bare minimum resource. Hrm, I'd say the world building is fun in terms of scope - at least at a conceptual level - but sloppily introduced, executed and with weak incorporation into existing lore.
